Dermaplaning is beneficial for many skin types, especially if you have dull, dry, or uneven-looking skin. It is also one of the professional exfoliation treatments that may be considered during pregnancy. If you have severe eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or active acne, we’ll discuss whether another treatment may be a better option during your consultation.
No. This is one of the most common myths about dermaplaning. The treatment removes hair at the surface but does not change the hair follicle, color, thickness, or natural growth pattern. Regrowing hair may feel slightly different at first because it has a blunt tip rather than a naturally tapered end, but it will grow back exactly the same.
Most patients describe dermaplaning as a gentle shaving sensation or a light sandpaper-like scraping across the skin. The treatment is generally comfortable and virtually painless. Some temporary tightness may occur immediately afterward, but it typically resolves quickly.
Results from a single dermaplaning treatment typically last about three to four weeks. As dead skin cells naturally accumulate and fine facial hair regrows, we may recommend maintenance treatments every three to six weeks to help maintain a consistently smooth, radiant complexion.
Many patients notice that makeup applies more smoothly after dermaplaning because the skin’s surface is freshly exfoliated. Your B+A provider may recommend leaving your skin makeup-free for the first few hours after treatment to allow it to recover comfortably.
Yes. Dermaplaning is often combined with treatments such as HydraFacial®, chemical peels, SkinPen® microneedling, or selected laser treatments when appropriate. Removing surface buildup may improve treatment preparation and product absorption. Your B+A provider will recommend the safest combination and treatment sequence for your skin and goals.
Dermaplaning generally requires little to no downtime. Mild redness or sensitivity may occur for an hour or two after treatment, but most patients return to work and normal daily activities immediately. Because freshly exfoliated skin may be more sun-sensitive, we recommend wearing broad-spectrum SPF and limiting direct sun exposure for the remainder of the day.
When performed by a trained professional, dermaplaning is considered a very safe treatment. Potential side effects include temporary redness, mild sensitivity, minor nicks, or breakouts in patients who are prone to acne. Dermaplaning is generally not recommended over active acne or irritated skin. Because the results are temporary, periodic maintenance treatments are recommended to maintain smoother, brighter-looking skin.
Most patients schedule dermaplaning every three to six weeks, depending on their skin type, hair growth, and skincare goals. Treatments are generally not recommended more frequently than every three weeks, allowing the skin to complete its natural renewal cycle before the next session.
