Our surgeons perform the following surgical procedures with the da Vinci surgical system or laparoscopically to help bariatric patients achieve sustained weight loss:
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
During a gastric sleeve surgery (sleeve gastrectomy), Dr. Basa or Dr. Abando will remove approximately 75% of your stomach and create a banana-shaped pouch. Your stomach’s smaller size allows it to:
- Hold less food at a time, allowing you to feel fuller faster.
- Absorb fewer calories because of its reduced size.
Gastric Bypass
The gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass) entails Dr. Basa or Dr. Abando reducing the size of your stomach and “bypassing” part of your small intestine. So, besides making your stomach smaller, the “bypass” also helps your body absorb fewer calories. This isn’t a good option for patients who need to take NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen), as patients are at an escalated risk of developing ulcers after surgery.
Modified Duodenal Switch
The modified duodenal switch (also referred to as the laparoscopic single anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve, SADI-S) is a good option for patients experiencing severe obesity or who have type 2 diabetes. It’s similar to the gastric bypass (it involves reducing the stomach size and “bypassing” part of the small intestine) but won’t require you to stop taking NSAIDs post-procedure.
Lap Band Removal Procedure
B+A Surgeons doesn’t provide lap band surgery, as research has shown it’s not effective for sustained weight loss. However, if you have a lap band and are not satisfied with your results, we can remove it and perform our Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
Medical Weight Loss Program
