Advice From a Team of Specialists
Our team at B+A Surgeons is more than qualified to advise you on your weight loss goals.
Dr. Nicole Basa and Dr. Alan Abando founded B+A Medical Center because they wanted to help the people of their area combat obesity and live healthier lives.
Dr. Basa is an award-winning medical professional who has completed over 4,000 surgeries over the course of her career. She is a national trainer for robotic bariatric surgery, and in 2010, she completed the first ever fully robotic roux en y gastric bypass in Central Texas.
Dr. Basa is also an excellent choice for patients who want a body contouring treatment. As the Medical Director for the Med Spa, she is the perfect resource for patients who want to receive quality medical care.
Dr. Abando is an acclaimed surgeon with a storied career. Dr. Abando specializes in general surgery, bariatrics, body contouring, and more. He gives back when he can, and he even taught at Huntington Memorial Hospital’s general surgery residency program.
Together, Dr. Basa and Dr. Abando have the experience necessary to help any patient achieve their weight loss goals.
The Right Clinic for Results
One reason patients prefer working with our weight loss clinic in Austin is because of the many resources we offer. After taking the time to educate patients on the cause of their excess weight, we build a personalized plan to meet their needs.
Your time is precious—and your weight loss goals even more so—so when you come to a clinic like B+A for results, our team works hard to deliver on them.
Sitting Down With Our Team
The consultation process is a vital step in ensuring that patients feel heard, educated, and confident on a path forward. During the consultation, a patient will sit down with Dr. Basa or Dr. Abando and discuss their treatment goals.
Patients should familiarize themselves with their medical history before meeting with our team, as our doctors will go over past surgeries and procedures. Depending on your condition, we may also need to complete cardiac and psychological tests. If you need cardiac testing, you won’t need to go far—we perform cardiac testing onsite.
We take the consultation at a steady pace, ensuring that patients understand each step of the process.
Education is always a priority for our team at B+A Surgeons. We don’t just want to help you lose weight; we want you to understand how to build a healthier lifestyle.
Non-Surgical Treatment Options
Not all of our patients who need to lose weight will require invasive surgery. We have a number of other non-surgical options that can help patients live healthier.
Weight Loss Injections
Weight loss injections can help patients who overeat. If you need help managing your caloric intake, then these injections can inhibit your appetite. With this treatment, you will be less likely to go eat more than your recommended number of calories each day.
Hormone Optimization
One reason you might be susceptible to unwanted weight gain is because of imbalanced hormones. A hormone imbalance can lead to mood swings, improper sleep, and weight gain. If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, hormone optimization could be an effective solution. Our team will insert hormone pellets into the body that can provide results for up to 6 months, so you can experience prolonged results without constant upkeep.
Non-Surgical Weight Loss Program
We also offer a non-surgical weight loss program for patients who want to shed unwanted pounds without an invasive procedure. Our providers can examine your habits, provide nutritional advice, and extensive testing to help you understand why you gained weight and how to lose it. We provide long-term solutions through education and training.
These are all effective options to help patients lose weight through non-surgical means. But if we do decide that you require surgery, we can help you through the process.
Preparing for Your Procedure
Preparing for weight loss surgery requires a strict health regimen. Before we can complete a surgery, we require patients to lose 5-10% of their total body weight.
You won’t need to undergo this task alone, however. One of our own dieticians will help you through the process, offering you personalized advice and health recommendations.
At B+A Surgeons, we believe that building healthy habits prior to your surgery will set you up for success in the days, months, and years following your surgery. Losing weight is only the first step in your health journey; you also want to maintain your results.
The Benefits of the da Vinci Process
At our weight loss clinic in Austin, we complete surgeries with the help of the da Vinci Surgical System.
The da Vinci Surgical System is robotic surgical aid that allows Dr. Basa and Dr. Abando to perform surgery with advanced precision. Robotics can provide more effective results by offering increased dexterity and control during procedures.
As a result, our surgeons won’t need to spend as much time in the operating room, reducing risk for patients with a higher BMI. Our patients’ safety is always the number one priority for our team, and the da Vinci Surgical System allows us to minimize potential complications.
The da Vinci can also improve patient satisfaction at our weight loss clinic in Austin. Using this surgical system can lower the length of a patient’s hospital stay following their surgery. It can also help patients return to their daily schedule faster.
Performing weight loss surgery can be physically exhausting, and the da Vinci system lessens the demand on our surgeons, so they can focus exclusively on achieving the best possible results.
If you could benefit from a surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System, our providers will discuss your options during your initial consultation.
Our Options for Weight Loss Surgery
Our surgeons offer several options for weight loss surgery. Depending on your goals and condition, any of these options may be right for you.
Gastric Sleeve
The human body naturally struggles to lose weight, so our surgeons may perform a gastric sleeve procedure to manually a patient’s stomach capacity. During a gastric sleeve procedure, Dr. Basa or Dr. Abando may remove up to 75% of a patient’s stomach.
This causes the patient to require fewer calories and the patient’s brain to receive fewer hunger signals.
Put simply, a patient will feel more satisfied, even though they’re eating less. Patients can see substantial weight loss results following their gastric sleeve procedure at our weight loss clinic in Austin.
Gastric Bypass
As with the gastric sleeve procedure, a gastric bypass surgery drastically reduces the amount of food that the stomach can contain. Our surgeons will staple the stomach together, leaving a small pocket for incoming food.
Because of this, the patient can no longer consume the same number of calories as they could before. But the gastric bypass also modifies the digestive system. As the name suggests, the procedure bypasses certain parts of the stomach and the intestine.
This modified digestive system can absorb fewer calories (but it can also absorb fewer minerals and vitamins, so we will recommend patients take a supplement following their procedure). This calorie deficit can result in substantial weight loss and fewer obesity-related conditions.
Modified Duodenal Switch (SADI)
The Modified Duodenal Switch combines the gastric bypass and the gastric sleeve procedures for substantial weight loss results. Dr. Basa or Dr. Abando may perform this procedure as a revision to the gastric sleeve if the results are not satisfactory. But depending on your needs this, our surgeons can also perform this procedure as a standalone option.
The first step in this procedure is removing a substantial part of the stomach, after which our surgeons will bypass a section of the bowel, making it more difficult for the body to absorb calories. The patients will eat less, and absorb less of the food they do consume.
Patients who receive this surgery may also notice the reduction of a number of other health conditions, like sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes. The benefits of a procedure like a modified duodenal switch are far more than aesthetic.
Gastric Band
A gastric band procedure sees surgeons wrap a lap band (a silicone ring) around the top of the stomach to reduce food intake. The results of a gastric band surgery are not as prominent as other procedures—you should expect to only lose as much as 40% of your excess weight.
Despite the lower efficacy of the results, many patients originally chose this surgery because it often requires shorter hospital stays than similar weight loss surgeries. But because of the insubstantial nature of this procedure’s results, we don’t offer gastric band surgery at our weight loss clinic in Austin.
We can help patients simply remove their lap band, or if they desire, we can convert the band to a more effective surgery.
A Weight Loss Resource
For many, a major obstacle to a healthier lifestyle is purely due to a lack of education. Between inheriting bad habits from parents to a lack of in-depth nutrition science and coaching in the education system, it’s no wonder so many are struggling. We’ve found our passion in helping curb this deficit at our weight loss clinic in Austin; we want to help our patients understand the science not just behind treatments and procedures, but in living a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle.
In addition to how much time we spend with patients in our office, we also created a blog—a consistent resource for patients hoping to learn more about weight loss treatments.
Our expert providers personally curate and edit these blogs, so readers can always be sure the information is relevant and useful. If you want to get informed about our process, our blog is a perfect place to start.
